Advice for Adults Beginning Ballet

Most people think of ballet as a discipline taken up in childhood. And while most professional dancers did indeed start while still in school, it’s still possible to take up dance as an adult. It is a fun and satisfying way to express yourself, keep fit and acquire a new social life. Keep a few things in mind as an adult beginner.
  1. Focus on Stretching

    • One big advantage the under-eight crowd has is natural flexibility. As an adult, unless you’re a serious athlete already, you have probably stiffened up to some extent. Before taking up ballet and while you begin to dance, learn and undertake a serious stretching routine. Stretch twice a day for best results. Focus on your back and hips, areas which often are the stiffest, and which you’ll use the most in ballet class.

    Find the Right Class

    • Adult ballet classes come in many forms. Some may be for those who once danced as a child and are coming back after a break. Others will be for complete beginners. Some may lead to performance opportunities; others will be completely recreational, focused only on fitness and fun. Set your own goals first, and then go along to a class to observe before signing up. Ask yourself if you’re comfortable with the atmosphere, and if it will give you the experience you’re looking for.

    Communicate with Your Teacher

    • Find out what the requirements are for dress and gear before you start. Some classes are very relaxed and will allow you to dance in any loose, comfortable clothing. Other classes may have strict requirements about ballet clothing. Get advice about shoes. Shoes are a dancer’s tool and you should invest in the right shoes. Talk to your teacher also about your physical health and any past injuries or illnesses you have had.

    Read Up

    • Ballet has lots of terminology associated with it – especially French names. While a complete beginner class should explain all of these terms as you progress, you may feel more comfortable going into the ballet experience with at least a bit of knowledge. Read ballet books and familiarize yourself with basic positions and terms before you start.
