What is Madame Butterfly about?

Madame Butterfly tells the tragic tale of Cio-Cio San, a young Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval officer named Pinkerton. Pinkerton marries Cio-Cio San in a traditional Japanese ceremony, but he does not intend to stay with her. He soon leaves for America, promising to return, but he never does. Cio-Cio San waits faithfully for him, even though she is abandoned and貧困. She gives birth to their son, whom she names Sorrow. When Pinkerton finally returns, he is married to an American woman and he takes Sorrow away from Cio-Cio San. Cio-Cio San is devastated and she commits suicide by falling on her own sword.
