Tips on Using Nuendo

Nuendo software by Steinberg is packed with features meant to streamline your workflow and quicken the recording process. Knowledge of these features will help you focus more on the art of recording and less on computing. Putting them to work for you can also save setup time in the future.
  1. Set Yourself Up

    • Once you have set up the number of tracks to record, save the project as a template. Nuendo will save the number of tracks, input buses and even effect buses and group channels. This is especially helpful if you record sessions with a similar number of tracks each time. Also, label your tracks before hitting the record button. Your tracks are saved as a file under the name listed while recording. If you don’t name your tracks beforehand, you might have gallons of trouble finding tracks later if the hard drive crashes, or if the project is mixed on another system.

    Customize Your Keyboard

    • On the “File” tab, there is an option titled “Key Commands.” This tool allows you to choose keys for specific functions. For example, you can assign “Alt + F” to create an effect bus. This will save you from wandering through cumbersome drop-down menus each time you want to add an effect bus. Install hot keys for the commands you use most often.

    Have a Savings Plan

    • Save your work frequently. Creating a command key for the save function will help make it a habit. Also, back up your projects on an external hard drive. The world of computers can be an unpredictable one. What is predictable, however, is the feeling of remorse you would feel after losing countless hours of work due to system failure.

    Into the Trick Bag

    • The crossfade command will smooth out any edits you make. Without it, you may hear audio splices or even pops. Right-clicking on a spliced section of audio that is highlighted will allow you to add an effect to that section only. This is very helpful if one particular note is out of tune and you don’t want to shift the pitch on the entire track. Should your CPU be getting out of hand, you can conserve it by saving an individual track with many effects, and then importing the saved file back into the project. When you comp multiple tracks into one, using the color chart at the upper right hand corner of project window can keep the tracks organized. Coloring tracks is helpful while mixing as well, especially when you are grouping them.
