How to Write a Confirmation Poem

A religious confirmation is the ceremony at which a baptized person affirms her Christian beliefs and agrees to follow the tenets of the religion for her lifetime. The confirmation, which usually occurs in adolescence but can take place at any stage of life, admits individuals as full members of the church. Friends and family in attendance often write poems and prayers to celebrate this Catholic rite of passage.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose whether to write a free-verse poem or a prayer-like poem. For example, you may write a poem in the style of a prayer, starting with "May your faith confirm you." Or you could opt for a free-verse poem that begins with "The life in the water will move you today."

    • 2

Start the poem with a strong first line, which addresses the person being confirmed by name. For example, "May your faith confirm you, Allison." When you read the poem aloud at her confirmation, or give it to her as a gift, she will treasure how you wrote it just for her.

    • 3

Include details of the person's life. Write about your observations of him growing up and who he has become in his faith. You could craft a few lines about how you remember Nathan maturing, making mistakes and turning to God for help. For example, "When Nathan learned that running away from home only brought him mud and mosquitoes, he first turned to his parents, then to God."

    • 4

Point out questions that she might ask in her Christian faith. For example, you could write "As you grow in life and in your faith, you may ask 'Who am I? What should I want? Which way should I go?' While the questions are always hard, it's easy to know who to turn to: Him. Folding your hands and bowing your head will always humble you."

    • 5

Title the poem. Include the person's name in the title. For instance, you might write "Confirmation Poem for Nathan" or "A Prayer for Allison."
