Compose a special dedication that can be read before reciting the poem. Explain why the poem was written and how the research was obtained to write this special tribute. Thank everybody who helped in creating it.
Research some of the qualities about the person you are going to write about. Survey some of his friends or family members about his personality.
Find out what kind of occasion that the poem will be for. Compose the poem according to the theme. If it's for a coming home party, a birthday, or holiday, set the tone of the poem to it.
Browse through some old family photos of the person or talk to other family and friends about her childhood. Write about some of her favorite or funny moments in childhood that others might remember.
Combine the research that you did from family members and friends to write the poem. The beginning can be about childhood memories, the middle can be about some of the great aspects of his personality and the things that he does, and the end can be why this special tribute has been created for the person. Add some personal jokes that everybody would understand to lighten the mood of the poem as well.
Add any accessories to the poem to personalize it such as pictures of the person that the tribute is for or music to read the poem to, or to play afterwards.
Pass out extra copies of the poem for everybody to have afterwards or place a large visual copy of it that can easily be seen.
