How to Write A Simple Alphabet Poem

Originating with the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, an alphabet poem is a simple poem suitable for children to write. The structure of an alphabet poem mirrors an acrostic: every line of the poem begins with a different letter of the alphabet, in ascending order, for a total of 26 lines. The poem can include rhyming couplets, but does not have to. Often alphabet poems follow a theme, such as Christmas or nature. Children can make a great gift for their parents or teacher with an alphabet poem.

      Write out the alphabet vertically on the left-hand side of a piece of paper in bold letters.

      Choose a topic to write about. A topic helps your poem maintain unity, which means it sticks to one focus. Write about your favorite holiday, person or sport, or something in nature.

      Create a descriptive sentence or phrase about your topic beginning with the letter “A.” Write a complete sentence, such as “Autumn leaves flutter in the breeze,” or merely a phrase or single word, such as “Autumn leaves,” or even just “Autumn.”

      Craft lines for every letter of the alphabet, from A to Z.
