Bard did not live in The Hobbit. He lived in Lake-town, which was a town built on stilts over the surface of Lake Town, at the foot of the Lonely Mountain.
He wasn't introduced until the novel "The Hobbit" until the events of the novel, "The Hobbit", during which the dragon Smaug attacked Lake-town. He was the only one who was able to kill Smaug, ultimately saving Lake-town from Smaug's fire.
