Short Essay Writing Tips

Short essays are a common assignment at various levels of education. They are often given during exams, as homework or are written in class. Once the writer understands a few simple tips, the short essay becomes easier and--maybe--more fun to write. It is important to pay attention to the length requirement of the essay, as many teachers will expect anywhere from a few paragraphs to one or two pages.
  1. Topic

    • Choose an interesting topic.

Write an essay about a topic that interests you. If the assignment is open-ended, look at some possible options of interest. For example, if the topic is "books," choose a book that you know you truly like. If the topic is assigned, make sure to narrow the topic down to an angle that makes it easier to write about. Broad topics usually can't be covered in short essays, but one element of a topic can easily be written. Pay attention to the length requirement set by the teacher, though.

    Research

    • Research should be completed beforehand.

Some projects require research. Others are written from the writer's point of view or about a personal experience. However, if research is required, it is important to have it finished before the writing process begins. The writer should always have an understanding of her topic so that the words flow smoothly and clearly. Reading before writing the short essay will help ensure the writer's clarity on the topic.

Research should always be completed using legitimate sources, such as encyclopedias, journals and text books.

    Thesis

    • State a thesis, if necessary.

Make sure to introduce the topic clearly so that the reader knows what the essay is about. Sometimes, a thesis statement is necessary. The thesis statement is an opening sentence that lets the reader know what they will be reading about. In essays, the writer provides evidence and support information to the thesis. In some short essays that do not require a thesis, it is still important to remain clear and direct. The essay should have a main point.

    Writing in Class

    • Always write clearly.

If the essay is being written in class on paper--without the use of a computer or a spell-check--it is important to write clearly. Use concise sentences that illustrate your point. Make sure that your handwriting is clear and that the topic is introduced in the beginning and summarized in the end. Adhere to length requirements.
