Tips on Writing a Personal Journal

People write and keep journals for a variety of reasons. Some use it as a way to remember important events in their lives and some use it as a way to get their thoughts and feelings out. There are also creative writing journals, where people record their poetry or ideas for other writing. Whatever the reason, use the multitude of creative tools available to give it your own personal flair.
  1. Choosing A Journal

    • Most department stores and bookstores sell a variety of journals from which to choose. Some are solidly bound, like a regular hardback book, and those are sturdier; however, one downfall to these types of journals is that pages can't be added or removed. There are spiral-bound journals, which are slightly more flexible as far as creativity goes, however, pages still can't be added. The other option is to create your own journal by choosing a three-ring binder and adding pages as needed. Whenever you choose your journal, consider the type of journal you want to have. For example,if you are keep a memory journal, include mementos, which would make either a spiral bound or three-ring binder journal ideal.

    Writing Tools

    • There are several different types of pens to choose from, and once again, the type that you choose depends on the kind of journal you are writing. There are regular ball point pens for basic writing purposes, and if you want to give your writing a fancier style, opt for a calligraphy pen. If you're worried about making mistakes and want your journal to be especially neat, opt for a pencil rather than a pen. Additional materials to utilize include glue sticks to add mementos, decorative stickers to dress up a page or help express a thought, and white-out, in case you use an ink pen.

    Writing in Your Journal

    • Depending on the journal type, write in it at different times. If you have a journal to record thoughts and feelings, write in a quiet place, where you can think without distraction. If you have a memory journal, carry a small, pocket notebook with you to make notes on particular things that you want to remember. Then, settle down with your journal later on and record everything accordingly. Write in your journal as little or as much as you like, whenever the feeling strikes you.
