How to Correctly Credit the Author of a Book in a Report

MLA (Modern Language Association) is the style most commonly used for writing papers and citing sources in liberal arts and humanities courses, according to the educational site Purdue OWL. Teachers may request that students use MLA style to write a book report and to cite the book's author. According to the "MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers," its style provides a "system for referencing sources through in-text parenthetical citation and Works Cited pages."

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the author of the book you are reporting about in your introduction. Let your reader know right from the beginning that the book you are reporting on is, for instance, Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice." If your book report focuses on two separate books and separate authors, introduce both authors in your introduction.

    • 2

Quote passages and paraphrases from the book in the body of your report. Cite these quotations by including the author's last name and the page number where the quote or paraphrase appears.

Purdue OWL notes that the author's name could appear either within the sentence or the parentheses following the quotation or the paraphrase. The page number or numbers for the attribution should always be inside the parentheses, not within your sentence.

    • 3

Cite multiple works by the same author in one book report by including a shortened title for the work that will distinguish it, according to Purdue OWL. Place the title in parenthesis and the quotations along with a page number, for example, ("Pride and Prejudice" 102).

    • 4

Write a works cited page. Include a separate entry for each book mentioned in your report. The "MLA Handbook" instructs you to note the author name, book title, publication date, book edition, publisher and place of publication.
