How to Do the Animal Bop

The Animal Bop is a dance designed for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students that prompts them to act like animals to a musical beat. The dance allows kids to be silly and creative as they explore animal characteristics. "Doing the Animal Bop," a picture book published and written by Jan Ormerod and Lindsey Gardiner, comes with a related music CD. Teachers do not need musical backgrounds to teach from the book, which has sold more than 750,000 copies worldwide.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather children together in an open space and instruct them to spread out. If they can touch their neighbor, they are too close. The Animal Bop requires space.

    • 2

Put in the "Doing the Animal Bop" CD that came with the corresponding book. Do not start the CD until everyone is positioned and ready.

    • 3

Stand in front of the group or sit on a stool and hold the book in your hand. Introduce the book to the students. Explain to them that they will be learning the Animal Bop. They will be dancing like ostriches by bouncing their feathers, jiggling like monkeys and hissing and slithering like snakes. Instruct them to use their imaginations and creativity. Instruct them to listen closely and to dance like the animal character they see on the page and are prompted to dance like on the CD.

    • 4

Open the book, turn on the CD and begin. The CD will prompt you and the class as the book progresses forward. The illustrations are bright and easy for students to see. The text rhymes, so it goes along with the musical beat in an entertaining way.
