How Do I Reference the Encyclopedia Americana?

Citing and referencing your sources is not always the easiest part of writing a paper. This is especially true if the source does not follow the rules of basic citation. The Encyclopedia Americana, is not exception, however. It is only a volume of works published with entries signed by various writers and has been doing so for more than a century.
  1. MLA Reference

    • Begin with the name of the writer of the entry. Type the last name, followed by a comma and then the first name. Next, enter the entry’s title surrounded by quotation marks. Add a period before the last set of quotations. Type the Encyclopedia Americana in italics or underlined, followed by a period. Find the edition number on the book’s spine of the title page. Enter it next, the words “ed” and a period. Enter the year that the book was published, found on the title page, and a period. Now, type the word “Print” and a period. This tells the reader that you are referencing the print edition of the work.

      Here's an example:
Pfiefer, S. "Cataloging Books." Encyclopedia Americana. Vol. 5. 2000. Print.

    APA Reference

    • An APA style reference is a bit different. Enter the last name of the entry’s writer, a comma and the writer’s first name followed by a period. Put the year that the book was published within parenthesis and then a period. Now type Encyclopedia Americana in italics. Place the edition number and then the word “ed.” in parenthesis followed by a comma. Next place the volume numbers in the parenthesis after the word “Vols.” and then a period. Enter Danbury, a period, Scholastic Library Publishing and another period. Danbury is the location of the Encyclopedia Americana and Scholastic is its publisher since 2001.

Your APA reference should look like this:
      Pfiefer, S. (2000). Encyclopedia Americana.(Vol. 5). Danbury. Grolier.

    Chicago Style Reference

    • The note format for Chicago Style differs from MLA and APA formatting styles. In the notes, enter the name of the entry’s writer as the first and last name followed by a comma. Type the name of the entry in quotations. Place a comma before the closing quotation. Next, place the word “in”, Encyclopedia Americana in italics and then a comma. Enter Danbury, a colon and Scholastic Library Publishing (for editions published after 2001), a comma and the publishing year in parenthesis. Then add a comma and the page number of the entry.

It should look like the following:
      S. Pfiefer. "Cataloging Books," in Encyclopedia Americana, (Danbury: Grolier, 2000), 807-09.

For the bibliography page, there will be some changes. Enter the last name and then the first name of the writer, a period and add the entry title in quotes with a period. Type Encyclopedia Americana in italics, a comma and the page numbers followed by a period. Next type Danbury, a colon, Scholastic Library Publishing, a comma and the publishing year. End the entry with a period.

The entry should look like this example:
Pfiefer, S. "Cataloging Books." Encyclopedia Americana, 807-09. Danbury: Grolier, 2000.
