How to Reference a Journal

Properly referencing an article found in a journal in MLA style can be one of the most frustrating parts of writing an essay, term paper or research paper. Sometimes, but not always, a professor will require that you list journals that you referenced while researching a paper.

      Reference an article in a journal paginated by volume. Start with the name of the article’s author, last name, comma, first name, period. Next write the article’s title in parenthesis followed by a period. Next, underline the journal title, followed by the volume number. Place the date of the journal in parenthesis followed by a colon, page numbers, period.

      Sometimes an instructor will ask for an annotated reference. They want a short synopsis of the information that you found in the book. Write the book’s reference information followed by a sentence or two describing the book. Start with the name of the article’s author, last name, comma, first name, period. Next write the article’s title in parenthesis followed by a period. Next, underline the journal title, followed by the volume number, period, issue number. Place the date of the journal in parenthesis followed by a colon, page numbers, period. Follow the citation with a short synopsis of the article

      After listing all of the works referenced, highlight text, right click or through the tool bar, select Paragraph. Using the pull down menu under Special, select Hanging. This will create a reference page with each entry having a hanging indent which is required in MLA style.
