How to Write a Two Tone Poem

A two-tone poem is a unique art requiring the poet to write a work that expresses two moods or points of view at the same time. This two-sided poem can be achieved by contrasting images and figurative language that suggests two attitudes toward a subject matter.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a topic for your two-tone poem. Chose a subject that you are passionate about and can write about in explicit detail.

    • 2

Brainstorm. Write sentence fragments expressing your thoughts about the topic, or perhaps tell a story. Select key words you would like to use in the poem, words that are connotative of the topic and may be interpreted in two ways. If necessary, use a dictionary or thesaurus to inspire your word choice.

    • 3

Rearrange your thoughts and ideas to create a coherent flow to your poem. Organize the sentence structure so that two conflicting themes appear in the poem.

    • 4

Edit your poem. Add in additional thoughts, fragments and words to the rough draft of your poem. When you are editing the poem, cross out words and phrases rather than erasing them. You never know if you might want to use old ideas again.

    • 5

Strengthen your diction. Use a thesaurus, if necessary, to make sure that every word of your poem is strong and coherent. Choose words that may be interpreted as depicting two conflicting emotions.

    • 6

Refine. Make final adjustments to your poem. Rewrite or print the final poem on a clean sheet of paper.
