Why did Beyond Birthday from Death Note Another Los Angeles BB Murder Cases commit suicide in the end of novel?

Beyond Birthday did not commit suicide in Death Note: Another Note.  In the novel, Beyond Birthday was defeated by Near and Mello, and was subsequently shot by the Kira Taskforce after he attacked an FBI agent. It is never explicitly stated that he died as a result of this, however.
