The Akkadians adopted the Sumerian writing system, cuneiform, and adapted it to their language after they came into contact with the Sumerian civilization. The Akkadians also absorbed many Sumerian words and expressions into their own language, and they borrowed some Sumerian religious and cultural practices. The Akkadian language eventually replaced Sumerian as the spoken language of Mesopotamia.
