How did historical Verona inspire shakespeare to write Romeo and Juliet?
While Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was set in Verona, Italy, there is no evidence that the Italian city, culture or history directly inspired Shakespeare's work. The plot of Romeo and Juliet is believed to have been derived from a much older Italian story, "The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet", written by Arthur Brooke in 1562.
