- When driving an ambulance down a road, Frederic Henry crashes into a huge tree that had fallen earlier during a storm because he was preoccupied talking and flirting with Helen Ferguson.
Chapter 11:
- While intoxicated, Henry mistakenly puts on British trousers he finds and finds himself unable to take them off because of their strange design. He has to hide from his fellow Italian officers until he finally manages to slip out of them.
Chapter 15:
- Despite being an artillery officer, in the chaos of a retreat, Henry volunteers to be a stretcher-bearer because the medical orderlies had suddenly disappeared. He encounters various chaotic and disturbing scenes but ends up getting lost and separated from his troops while carrying someone else.
