In the novel "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, the following events take place:

1. Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12, volunteers to take her younger sister Primrose's place in the 74th Annual Hunger Games, a televised event in which 24 children are chosen from the 12 districts of Panem to fight to the death.

2. Katniss and the other tributes are taken to the Capitol, where they undergo training and preparation for the Games. Katniss forms an alliance with Peeta Mellark, a fellow tribute from District 12.
