How do John-go-in-the-Wynd and Robin know the sentry on wall is far enough away to act?

In the poem "The Wife of Usher's Well," John-go-in-the-Wynd and Robin do not know the sentry is far enough away to act. They simply act when the sentry turns, revealing his back.
