Molly Moon Activities

Molly Moon is a character in a series of young adult books written by Georgia Byng. Molly is introduced in the first book as a 10-year-old girl who lives in Hardwick House, which is a home for orphans. There are currently five published books about Molly Moon and each book builds upon the previous story.
  1. Molly Moon Bubble Bath

    • Make bubbles in recognition of the importance of maintaining good body hygiene. In the book that introduced readers to Molly Moon, "Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism," Molly was punished for using too much water when taking her bath. Her punishment was to go three weeks without bathing and scrub the toilet with a toothbrush for a week. Cleanliness builds self-esteem and a positive body image while protecting kids from teasing peers. Bubble bath is simple to make. Combine 1/2 cup unscented shampoo, 1/2 tsp. salt, 3/4 cup water and 15 drops of a fragrant oil in a container; package in small lidded bottles for each child to take home.

    Create a Book of Hypnotism

    • Molly thought her bad luck would change as soon as she found the book "Hypnotism." Recreate the book by writing pages detailing how to hypnotize animals, people and groups. Write fictional accounts of positive and negative effects of hypnotism. Draw pictures of how different people and animals looked while in trances, as well as pictures of using a pendulum to put a person in a trance. Finish the book by creating a cover and warning page. Include a short notice about the importance of clearly stating what you want hypnotized people to do because they will take the commands literally.

    Family Trees

    • In "Molly Moon Stops the World" Molly discovers that her mother and father are both alive. Knowing where you come from is a basic piece of information that is often taken for granted. Have each kid make a family tree to trace her lineage. It can be a traditional pedigree chart, which means it starts with one person's name on the left and branches to the right with that person's parents, or kids can get creative by cutting a tree out of brown construction paper and gluing leaves made out of green, red or yellow construction paper with their names, their parents' names and their grandparents' names.

    Create a Sandwich

    • Molly Moon can travel through time and her adventures often take her to exotic locations. She is introduced to a variety of foods, but at the end of "Molly Moon, Micky Minus and the Mind Machine" the characters are putting together their favorite sandwiches. Give kids blank paper and ask them to draw and label the ingredients of their favorite sandwich. Or ask the kids to create the ultimate sandwich and explain why they want to try it.
