How to Locate the Copyright Holder on a Book

If you are writing an article and need specific information from your source, you need to locate the copyright holder. You might want to reference his illustrations, pictures or perhaps text, but you cannot do so without written consent from the copyright holder. Only the copyright owner or someone acting with the owner's authority, such as a publisher, can grant this permission.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the copyright page in the book to locate the copyright holder's name and possibly their contact information.

    • 2

Search the title of the book in your favorite search engine to try to locate the copyright information.

    • 3

Contact the publisher's rights department. If the book is no longer being published you may need to trace the author of the book. Do this by doing a copyright search. You perform a copyright search by navigating to the U.S. Copyright Office at copyright.gov. Select "Search the Catalog" and enter the name of the book you are searching information for.

    • 4

Send a permission request to use the author's work. This process takes time, and you must wait to hear back from the publishing office. If the author is the copyright holder, you can work with her directly.
