How did the word Maori come about when Captain Cook visited New Zealand?

Captain Cook did not introduce the word Māori. The word is derived from the Proto-Polynesian word *ma(h)oli*, meaning "indigenous person" or "native inhabitant", and was used by Indigenous Māori to refer to themselves before the arrival of Europeans to New Zealand.
