Collect paint chips from the paint aisle at the home improvement store. Keep the chips in order using the number printed somewhere on the card. This will allow your finished book to progress through the colors based on the way the colors are made at the store.
Locate the end of the card that has the manufacturing info. Usually these cards are long and narrow, and the information is along one narrow end. This is the bottom of the card.
Gather five cards together and jog them so that the cards are aligned perfectly. Set your sewing machine tension between 2 and 3 with a long stitch length and sew a seam 1/8 inch from the end of the paper. After sewing, clip the threads and turn the signature over and face down. Gather the next five cards and repeat until all the cards are sewn into groups called signatures.
Nail or clamp a 9x12-inch wooden picture frame to the side edge of the work table so that half the frame is above the top edge of the table. Cut and tie twine to the top horizontal part of the frame. Bring the twine down vertically and tie the other end to the bottom horizontal part of the frame. The twine should be taut. Tie a second piece of twine 1 inch away from the first twine toward the middle of the picture frame. If your paint chips are more square (not narrow and thin), you may need a third twine space 1 inch from the last one.
Thread a needle with heavy-duty thread. Bring the needle through the thread 2 inches from one end and pull the thread and knot to the bottom of the needle. Turn your stack of signatures right side up. Place the stack behind the frame and off to one side. Pick up the first signature. Turn it face down and centered on your two twine strings. The sewn edge should touch the twine.
Open your signature with one hand. Slide the needle between stitches from the outside of the sewn edge 1/2 inch from the left side. Pull your thread through until a 1-inch tail remains. Bring the needle from the inside back out close to the thread. Form a knot to tie the end around the stitches.
Take the needle back through to the inside of the signature. Bring the needle up on the left side of the first twine and back to the inside on the right side of the twine. Bring the needle up on the left side of the second twine and back to the inside on the right side of the second twine. Bring the needle up 1/2 inch from the side and pull the threads through to lock the signature to the twine.
Pick up your next signature and place it face down on the first one, aligning the edges. Bring the needle up and through to the inside of the second signature. Take the needle back to the left side going around the twine in the same way. Bring the needle out on the left side. Take the needle down to the first signature and slide the needle from the outside to the inside and back out. Form a knot and tie the two signatures together. Add your next signature and continue. At each end, press the signatures down, pull the thread tight and tie a knot between signatures. Stitch a book 3/4 to 1 inch tall. You may need to make two books for a lot of chips.
Tie of your thread end. Cut the twine 2 inches away from the spine in each direction. You should have a tightly sewn book without its cover.
Cut two pieces of hard art board 3/8 inch longer and taller than the size of your page. Cut one piece to this height and to the thickness of the page stack.
Cut decorator paper twice the length of the covers plus the thickness of the pages plus 1 1/2 inches. Cut the same paper the height plus 3/4 inch. This will be the cover paper. Place the decorator paper face side down. Paint one side of one long art board with white glue. Place the art board 3/8 inch from one end and 3/8 inch from the top and bottom, centered. Press the art board into the paper. Repeat on the other end of the same paper. Paint one side of your spine art board with glue and center it between your two long boards.
Cut the 4 corners of the paper at a diagonal 1/8 inch from the point. Place your cover paper over newspaper or scrap paper. Paint the inside edges of the art boards and the edges of the inside of the decorator paper with white glue. Fold the paper over the art boards and into the glue. Press and rub until they stick well.
Position the spine of the inside of the book over the art board spine. Fold each end of the twine in half with the ends pointed toward the spine. Tape the twine to the covers and decor paper using book binding tape. Start at the spine and press the twine down to the paper level. Keep the tape tight to the spine. Use a second piece of tape if necessary to cover the folded twine end. Repeat on both sides.
Measure for lining paper with the cover of the book open. Measure 1/8 inch from the edge of the cover to the end of the inside pages. Measure 1/8 inch from the top and bottom edge of the cover. Cut two sheets. Test-fit your sheets. You may need to make the sheet narrower on the page side to match the page height more exactly. Glue the paper over the inside of the cover and 3/8 inch along the page side. Repeat for the back cover.
