How to Choose a Layout For An Ebook

If you are planning to write an ebook, how do you know what layout to use? The right look, feel and design can make a big impact on how well your audience perceives your work. It can also impact future book sales. Here are some helpful tips to make your ebook project a success.

Instructions

    • 1

Read other ebooks to look for layout tips. Reading ebooks can help you find what you like and do not like so you can determine your own layout.

    • 2

Download a professional ebook layout template or decide upon a tool such as a word processor or page design software package. Some people publish electronic books in a simple Microsoft Word template while others use software such as Adobe Pagemaker or another custom-made tool.

    • 3

Choose a font that you can easily read. While it can be tempting to choose something that looks fancy such as a written script, think about your reader's eyes. Choose a font that's crisp and clear to make the book easy to read.

    • 4

Decide upon a pattern. Always choose the same headings and sized font for a particular section. For example, if you are going to underline a sub heading, underline it. If you want a chapter name to be bold, bold every chapter name. Choose equivalent spacing throughout the ebook for clarity and professional appearance.

    • 5

Edit your work, first in a print layout view. A good ebook should look professionally edited. Consider hiring an editor or asking someone with a sharp eye to review your final draft for small errors or inconsistencies in your layout.

    • 6

Print your book and read it in hard copy. Look for further inconsistencies or errors.
