How to Find Out of Print Books

An out-of-print book doesn't have to remain out of your reach. If you really want to get a copy of an out-of-print book, follow these simple rules to find it with ease and at a better price than its list price.

Instructions

    • 1

Check rare and used book stores for the out-of-print book. These types of stores often have the book that you're looking for. Get help from a sales associate by advising him of the title in which you're interested. The sales associate will tell you if it's in stock.

    • 2

Search for the out-of-print book using the Internet. The Internet has given rare book collectors unlimited resources for searching for that impossible title. Internet searches can be run in only a few minutes and can check many different databases at once.

    • 3

Visit your local library. There may be a chance that your library owns a copy of the out-of-print book. Even if your library doesn't, another one may, and you can take advantage of interlibrary loaning services to have the book in your hands in a matter of days.

    • 4

Inspect the discount shelves at regular book stores. Regular book stores often stack these shelves with out-of-print books or books that will soon be out of print to make room for other, new books.

    • 5

Query book discount warehouses. Thousands of remaindered books are housed in discount warehouses. Inquire about your specific title at the warehouse.

    • 6

Look through the stacks at thrift and resale stores. People often dump their collections at these types of stores when they no longer have room for them in their homes. Out-of-print books are sure to be found there.

    • 7

Conduct an Internet search for online auction sites. Out-of-print books find temporary homes at auction sites. Depending on the demand for the book, you may be forced to pay more for an out-of-print book at an auction site, but if you truly want the book, it will be worth it. However, out of print books generally sell for less than their publisher's price.
