How to Join an Online Book Club

Reading can be a lonely hobby, but it doesn’t have to be. Book clubs are for readers to discuss what they are currently reading. But with lives that are getting busier with less free time, it isn’t always practical to go out to a book club meeting. Online book clubs are a convenient alternative for readers who want to share their thoughts as well as learn about their favorite authors and books without leaving the comfort of their home.

Instructions

Choose the type of books you want to read in the near future. Readers who love to read usually already have an idea of the kind of books that they enjoy the most so this should not be too difficult. This will help narrow the choices of both websites and groups to choose to join.

Check with the local library to see whether they have an online group available. Some libraries have an online book club that sends excerpts of books via email. Later, readers can check out the book to read in its entirety. This service is convenient for readers to try new genres and authors. It also saves readers time and money.

Pick an active book club site to join. There are book club websites that focus on specific genres. Readers that read genre fiction can try the websites that publish the books they enjoy reading since some publishers have their own book forums. Barnes & Noble is one of the more active book club sites that offers book clubs in popular genres as well as classics and current titles. Booktalk.org has groups for both fiction and nonfiction. They choose a nonfiction title that is posted up to two months in advance for readers to have time to read and discuss. And for readers who specifically like the classics there is Book Glutton. They offer 1,060 books that can be read online using an “unbound reader” that allows users to read the books online without leaving the website. Readers can also choose to join a group and chat with them within the unbound reader. There is also Oprah's book club, which is the most popular book club on the net. All these book club websites require registering and are free to join.
