How to Write a Film Bibliography

Scholarly papers follow specific formatting rules from the Modern Language Association (MLA) for citing films in a bibliography of referenced works. Follow this guide to be sure you cite film references correctly using MLA style.

Instructions

    • 1

List each film bibliographic entry citing information in this order: Title. Director. Producer. Writer. Key performers. (Release year).

    • 2

Use these abbreviations with the entry: Dir., Prod., Writ., Perf., with a period and two spaces after each item.

    • 3

Cite the name of an individual first in the film entry if the reference is primarily about that person, rather than the film itself.

    • 4

Follow this example of a bibliography entry for a film when writing your own: Die Hard. Dir: John McTiernan. Prod. Joel Silver. Writ. Jeb Stuart. Perf. Bruce Willis, Bonnie Bedelia, Alan Rickman, Alexander Godunov. (1988).
