Make a great film. Create a film that is unique, has interesting characters and is something you really believe in. Characterize your film by genre, message and length. Is it a short film or feature length? Comedy or horror? About rebirth and moral learning or criminal lust?
Research festivals that accept films like yours. Some festivals are specialized and only accept short films, horror films, religious flicks, and so on. Make a list of ones your are eligible to enter. Determine your budget for entry fees.
Narrow down your list based on the prizes offered, amount of press, location, the notoriety and the people who attend. You want the most visibility and bang for your buck you can get. Read all the rules very carefully to be sure you and your film are eligible. Print out the entry form and fill it out completely.
Have copies of your film made on DVD with professional labeling, cases and dust jackets. Mail in the form, entry fee, film and any supplementary materials the competition requires. Track these entries on a spreadsheet that lists the competition, entry fee, date submitted, date of festival and any other important information.
Wait for a response as to whether your film as accepted to screen at each festival or not. Enter this information into your spreadsheet when you find out. Good luck!
