How to Use Recorded Books in the Library

Libraries provide a fantastic free service and are available to anyone. You can get a library card by visiting your local or school library; there may be a charge for out-of-area residents or non-students. Check out books, movies, music and recorded audio books at your local library for use in the library or at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Peruse available recorded books at your library. A librarian can point you toward the right area within the library; you may also search via key word, author or title on your library's website or electronic catalog.

    • 2

If using the website, you may be able to reserve a copy and pick it up at your convenience. You may also place a hold on a certain recorded book at the library; talk to a librarian about this service. However, libraries may only hold reservations for a certain amount of time and could charge you if you don't pick the recorded book up before the expiration date.

    • 3

For use within the library, reserve a computer or tape or CD player and headphones (or bring your own). For use at home, make sure you have the appropriate player, be it a cassette player or a CD player or computer.

    • 4

Insert the first disc or tape (there may be several if it's a lengthy book) into the player. Make sure the player has batteries and is in proper working condition. Adjust volume as desired.

    • 5

Insert subsequent discs or tapes once the first is finished.

    • 6

Return the recorded book to the library on or before the return date to avoid late fees. Make sure all discs or tapes are in the appropriate slots within the plastic case.
