How to Put a Spiral Ring Booklet Together

Spiral plastic ring binding is a popular binding style in which holes are punched through pages and a plastic coil is inserted through the holes and then trimmed to fit. For self-publishing writers, coil binding is one of the most cost-effective ways to bind a book, especially if you plan a small run. While many people have their spiral ring booklets assembled by a professional printer, the process can be done at home, either by hand or with the aid of a machine. The cheapest, but most time-consuming, way is by hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Print the document onto pre-punched spiral booklet paper that can purchased from an office supply store. Print the document as you would any document by placing pre-punched paper into the printer.

    • 2

Arrange your booklet in the proper order. The thickness of the booklet you will be able to make can vary depending upon the size of your machine, but most home binding machines can easily handle a booklet of 150 pages.

    • 3

Seat the booklet onto the binding machine. Don't turn on the machine until you have aligned the booklet with the binding guide on the machine. Check to make sure all of the holes in your pre-punched paper are lined up correctly. Be sure to place your booklet with the cover facing up.

    • 4

Load the spiral coil binder into the machine according to the instruction manual that comes with it. Machine operation varies from one machine to another. Turn on the machine. It will thread the plastic spiral binder automatically, then it will crimp the ends to hold the spiral and pages in place.
