Check the condition of your books. Most stores won't accept books with rips, tears, stains or odors. Books with rips taped together usually will not be accepted. There also shouldn't be any writing in the book (except for the author's autograph), no highlighting, pages falling out or broken spines. Book club books, old library books, advance reader's copies or uncorrected proofs typically are not accepted, either.
Find a bookstore online that advertises that it buys used books.
Locate each book's ISBN number. This 10- to 13-digit number can be found on the book's back cover, usually above the bar code, or at the front of the book on the same page as the copyright information. Enter all the ISBNs of the books you want to sell in the shop's book selling page.
Wait for the bookstore to make an offer for your books.
Consider the store's offer, which is based on the expected retail value of the books. This is affected by the book's market value, demand, in-print prices and the shop's current stock. Some sellers may give you 20 percent more for your books if you accept their offer for store credit instead of cash.
Mail your books to the store via parcel post or media rate. Usually, the store will give you a postage-paid send label to affix to your parcel so you don't have to pay for shipping the books.
