How to Donate Used Books in Illinois

The 21st state in the United States, Illinois is known as the "Prairie State" and the "Land of Lincoln." Three U.S. presidents were elected while living in the state, including Ulysses S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama. The state is also the fifth most popular state in the country. While in Illinois, visitors discover a vibrant literary scene, with numerous bookstores and libraries--and lots of opportunities to donate used books.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact any Veterans Affairs Administration hospital in your area. Illinois VA hospitals keep a small library for their patients and welcome new donations.

    • 2

Research libraries in your Illinois community. Libraries in the Chicago and Urbana-Champaign usually operate non-profit bookstores and regularly hold "Friends of the Library" events. These events directly benefit the public library system, by funding new acquisitions and administrative costs.

    • 3

Call second-hand bookstores, like Books at Sunset in Elgin, Illinois, or Top Shelf Books in Palantine, Illinois. Though these bookstores might have limited space for new books, most will welcome taking a look at popular books in good condition.
