Grants in Texas for Libraries

There are more than 100 public libraries and 100 academic libraries in Texas. This does not include elementary, middle and high school libraries. The Texas Library Association has a membership of more than 7,000 librarians from academic, school, public and special libraries throughout Texas. These libraries depend on funding from the government and from outside sources for general support and special programs. There are several funding options available to Texas libraries.
  1. Texas State Library and Archives Commission Grant Programs

    • The Texas State Library and Archives Commission administers several grant programs annually for libraries. Texas Reads Grants are awarded to public libraries to enhance reading programs and offerings for public literacy programs. Grant deadlines vary each year, but the maximum funding for this program is $3,000 per grant.

The Library Services and Technology Act Competitive Grant Program awards grants to enhance library services and technology. Projects that collaborate with community agencies are preferred. The maximum award size for this program is $75,000 and deadlines vary annually. Recent recipients of this grant program were collaboration efforts between Central Texas Library System and the Alamo Area Library System and between the West Texas Library System and the Northeast Texas Regional Library System. Other programs administered by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission include the Loan Star Libraries Program, TexNet Interlibrary Loan and TexTreasures.

Their main emphasis, however, is on organizations in the Houston area. Grants for libraries are offered through the education initiative, which grants money for charter schools, rural libraries, literacy programs, early childhood education and continuing education for teachers. Grant applications are reviewed in March, June, September and December. Grant amounts vary but the average grant is around $25,000. Past award recipients include Bailey H.
