Advantages of Public Libraries

Andrew Carnegie, the philanthropist who started the free public library service, believed that a public library has a value far beyond simply being the place you go to borrow a book. Communities with a thriving library service provide a vital resource for everyone. This includes providing books and educational materials, but for many people the library is also a place to study and work, read the newspaper, meet people and find classes.
  1. Reading

    • Libraries provide an opportunity to read, particularly for people who can´t afford to buy books regularly. Without libraries, disadvantaged citizens would have limited access to books and educational material, hampering their education and employment opportunities. The library also introduces children to reading and allows them to choose their own books without the limitations of cost. Importantly, the library is a warm place where older people, many of whom are socially isolated, can come to read and meet others.

    Studying

    • Some students don´t have a quiet place to study at home; the library provides them with the space they need. In addition, students have access to books and the Internet. Additionally, trained librarians are there to help them find the information sources they need for projects. Also, for people learning a hobby or thinking of starting a course of study, the library is a valuable source of information, especially for those who have limited funds and no home Internet access.

    Community Information

    • If you want to find an evening class, a group of like-minded people or a self-help group, many public libraries have bulletin boards where these activities are advertised for free. If you are a small-business owner, such as an alternative therapist, the library is a good place to place a leaflet about your services. Also, if you need help with finding the right department of a local government, the librarian will help you find the contact information.

    Job Search

    • Public libraries stock local and national newspapers and journals that people can use to look for jobs. You can use a computer to prepare your resume and read about the best ways to approach a job interview. In addition, the librarian can provide information about the industry and the company with which you are seeking employment, research that is a vital part of interview preparation.
