How to Conduct a Book Club

Conducting a book club is an excellent way to meet with friends, family or coworkers to discuss a favorite or popular book. A book club is also an opportunity to learn from others, as there will likely be more than one interpretation of the book's meaning. Conducting a club requires some forethought, but is simple to do. After the first few meetings, the discussion should flow more easily as the participants become more comfortable with each other and more familiar with the club's meeting format.

  1. Conducting a Book Club

    • 1

Decide on a meeting day and time. According to Reading Group Guides, meeting once per month is generally an ideal interval, but for longer books, once every other month is more suitable.

    • 2

Choose a meeting spot. Meeting at a library, bookstore, or a participant's home are common choices.

    • 3

Choose a meeting format. One option, according to Reading Group Guides, is to hire a professional leader, at least for the first few meetings. A second option is to elect a group member to conduct the meeting by putting together the questions for the group to discuss. This person could be the one who chooses the book for that meeting and/or performs background research about the book and the author. A third option is to allow each member to formulate questions for the group or to have each member choose a favorite passage from the book.

    • 4

Ask the prepared questions to the rest of the group or discuss each member's favorite passages.

    • 5

Continue until all questions are answered or all passages are discussed.
