How to Read Chapter Books

Reading chapter books is a big deal. You are moving away from picture books and starting to read longer books with many more words. You are also beginning to read on your own. It may seem a bit overwhelming to pick books on your own or to think about reading a bigger book. But, with a little practice, you will soon find favorite authors and a wonderful world of adventure waiting for you in the chapter books you discover.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a chapter book about a topic you find interesting. Books have been written on things like knights, dragons, fairies, animals, mysteries and adventures. Reading about something you already enjoy will make reading easier.

    • 2

Look at the artwork on the cover of the book. Try to guess what the story is about from the title and the pictures. Pay attention to the pictures in the book, but remember that chapter books have fewer pictures than what you may be used to in picture books. Now, as you read, pay attention to the words to get a picture in your mind of how the characters look and the places they go.

    • 3

Read carefully, beginning with just one or two chapters. You don't need to read the whole book all at once. It might be hard to stop at the end of some chapters since authors purposely write their stories to leave you "hanging" at the end of each chapter so you'll want to keep reading.

    • 4

Grow your vocabulary by learning the definitions of words you don't know. Try to figure out the meaning from the context, or the sentences surrounding the words. Look up other words in a dictionary.

Use a fun bookmark to mark your place when you stop reading for the day. You can make your own or get them from bookstores or the library. Be sure to put your books in a safe place and take good care of them so they last a long time.
