Press the power button located on the top left-hand edge to turn the Cruz Reader on. Connect the DC charger and plug it in to an electrical outlet if your reader has less than a full charge.
Insert a standard SD card into the SD card slot on your computer.
Navigate to the Velocity Micro website (see Resources). Click on "Support" and select "Cruz Support Center" from the drop-down menu.
Click the "Download Now" button below "Firmware Update R101/2/3." Save the downloaded ZIP file to your SD card's root directory. Do not change the file name or put it in a folder. If your browser modifies the file name in any way, change it back to the original name.
Remove the SD card from your computer and slide it in the external SD slot on the top right-hand edge of your Cruz Reader. Push down firmly until you hear a click, which indicates that the card is in place.
Hold down the power button until "Power Off" appears on the screen, then tap "Power Off" with your finger. If the Cruz Reader will not turn off, take off the back cover, disconnect the battery, reconnect the battery and put the cover back on. Do not continue the firmware update process until your Cruz Reader is turned off.
Hold down the "Volume Up" button located on the upper right-hand side of the Cruz Reader with your right hand. Hold down the power button with your left hand. Firmly hold both buttons down until a robot icon and a progress bar appear on the screen.
Release both buttons. Wait for the installation to complete. Repeat the installation process if a robot icon with a triangle and exclamation mark appears, as this indicates that the installation has failed.
Lay the Cruz Reader flat on a firm surface, with the screen facing up.
Tap the home icon in the top left-hand corner of your Cruz Reader's screen. The home icon looks like a little house.
Tap the menu icon in the center of the top of the screen. The menu icon is three horizontal lines surrounded by a square with rounded corners.
Tap "Settings" at the bottom right-hand side of the screen. Tap "Language & Keyboard," which is toward the bottom of the list. Tap "Touch Calibration," which is at the bottom of the list.
Touch the numbered crosses in turn, following the onscreen directions. Note the result, which can range from "poor" to "excellent." Repeat the calibration process until you achieve at least an average result.
