Donating College Textbooks

College textbooks are often one of the largest expenses for a student, so it is kind of you to be thinking of donating your textbooks to those that cannot afford them. There are many options for donating textbooks, and the options often vary depending on where you are located. With that in mind, here are a few places to try.
  1. Goodwill

    • Goodwill, which has almost 2,000 stores, accepts textbooks and will often even come to your door to pick up your donations. Goodwill offers these textbooks in their stores for a fraction of the market value, and, through employment, helps members of society get back on their feet. They direct 85 percent of revenues back into their employment and training programs.

    Books for Africa

    • Books for Africa can be found on many college campuses today when the end of the semester is nearing. There will often be bins for college students to place the textbooks they want to donate into. Since 1988, Books for Africa has shipped over 8 million books to children in Africa. The books are sorted and given to the students based on age and subject.

    Books Through Bars

    • A non-profit organization, Books Through Bars sends textbooks to prisons and halfway houses, which encourages education even within the prison system. Books Through Bars has sponsored artists from prisons to give exhibitions as well as hosted the first national conference for book programs within the North American prison system.

    Library

    • Your local public or school library may also take your textbooks off your hands. They will then go into circulation, where they will have the chance to be read by anyone within the community.
