How to Submit a Bound Galley for Book Reviews

Book reviews are one of the biggest ways readers become aware of new books. Review journals make their opinions after reading the bound galleys of a book months before its publication. Publishers usually produce bound galleys after a book manuscript has been typeset but before it has been proofread. This is, in a sense, the same as reading an actual copy of the book. Publishers rely on authors to generate a great deal of their own publicity and getting a great review from a respected review journal is the oldest and most surefire way to draw attention.

Instructions

    • 1

Research a list of book review journals that you want to submit the galley to. Some of the largest review journals include: "Publisher's Weekly," "Library Journal," "American Library Association" and "The New York Times Book Review."

    • 2

Read the submission guidelines of the book review journals you plan on submitting to. Most journals have similar guidelines. They generally want galleys three to four months prior to publication.

    • 3

Prepare the galley according to the journal's guidelines. The cover page of the galley should include, at the minimum, the following information: Title, author, price, publisher/imprint, format, number of pages and ISBN number.

    • 4

Write a separate cover letter that includes: a description of the book, a brief biography of the author and any pertinent publicity information.

    • 5

Mail one copy (or two, if requested) of the bound galley and cover letter to the address listed on the journal's submission site.
