How to Design, Print & Bind an Ebook

Many considerations should be taken into account when publishing an ebook. You will need to think through the layout, presentation and a host of other issues. Depending on the type of book you are publishing, the time and production investment may be considerable. A fiction title or a book on travel may translate very well in an ebook format while a lifestyle book may not.

Consider whether the format is appropriate for both electronic and traditional print design. Frequently, a design in one format does not easily translate to the other. It is important to choose design elements which will work both in print and electronic format before beginning. One may decide to either design based on a print format and try to make it translate to electronic format, or one may decide to design each template separately. You may use a program such as Adobe Acrobat, as most ebooks are sold in PDF form, or you may choose to use an online publisher.

Convert the ebook to a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat or use a PDF converter. While it is simpler to use a PDF converter, you may also convert using Adobe Acrobat. First, open the ebook in Adobe Acrobat. Select "Edit," then "Preferences," and "Convert to PDF." You will then need to save the document in Microsoft Word. Then choose "File," "Create PDF from File" and open the ebook file you just saved. You may now print the ebook saved. Set the printer to print two pages per sheet. If you are printing multiple books, it may be prudent to invest in quality printing software suitable for ebooks.

Choose your binding. Many options abound for binding. Spiral binding and plastic slide binding are more economical options. Traditional trade paperback binding options are available as well. You may select an online company to bind your books or you may do-it-yourself with bookbinding training. To do it yourself, stack the pages, straighten the binding edges by tapping them on your work station surface. Use heavy binder clips to keep the pages in place while working. Cut a strip of binding paper and fold it to fit over the bound paper. The strip should cover approximately one inch of the front and back cover. Use a strong flexible glue like Gorilla Glue and place it along the spine. Press the folded strip against the glue and hold. Wipe away any access glue. Move the clips so that they cover the spine and leave them on until the glue dries after several hours. Then, glue down the remainder of the strip on the front and back covers. You may then cover the printed book with your book cover. Again, pre-fold the cover and follow the same steps as noted for gluing the binding paper.
