How to Write and Self-Publish a Poetry Book

If you've written a collection of poetry that you'd like to bind and perhaps distribute, self-publishing may be the way to go. Compiling your work into a book format is relatively easy to do yourself or with the help of a self-publishing outfit. Make just a few copies for yourself and close family members, or print more copies if you would like to sell them commercially.

Instructions

    • 1

Type your poems and decide which to include in the book.

    • 2

Carefully proofread and edit your poetry for grammar, spelling and punctuation. Ask a friend or family members to read your poetry to check for mistakes that you may have overlooked. Make any necessary corrections.

    • 3

Research online publishing companies, which charge fees for self-publishing services. Such companies may provide a template to copy and paste your poetry into, or they may ask for your poems to format themselves. Work with the company to design the format and look of the book. Choose the typeface, illustrations, type of binding, kind of paper and cover design. Decide how many books to publish and place an order.

If you wish to sell your book, inquire at book stores that carry poetry. Stores generally take a percentage of each sale. They may also hold book-signing events at the store to promote sales. The publishing company that assists you in self-publishing your book can also assist you in promoting it.
