Proofread your text, then create the book layout using page design software. Be aware that your perfect bound book will cost less to print if you format it in a standard book size. If you need a complex book layout and don’t have the skills or software to do it yourself, you may want to hire a designer, or choose a book printer that offers design services.
Research book printers or manufactures on the web. You may be surprised that some book printers may be less expensive than using a local printer, even including the cost of shipping.
Make sure the printer offers all the services you need, such as perfect binding, color printing or inserts, design services, rush printing or printing in very small quantities (also called short-run printing or print on demand).
Choose a paper type for the inside of the book and the covers, based on what the printer offers. Decide how many copies of you book you need. (Larger print orders will cost more overall, but less per book.)
Get a quote for your perfect bound book from several book printers. Most printers offer quotes for free. Make sure to ask any questions you have about the book printer’s process or products. Some printers will let you see samples of their work for free or for a small shipping fee.
Compare the quotes, and select a printer based on price, quality of service and how helpful the staff is.
Submit your book to the printer. Most printers charge less if you can submit your work as an electronic file, such as PDF, rather than a hardcopy. Make sure to follow all the printer’s guidelines for preparing and submitting the file.
Follow up with the printer, and review any proofs the printer sends you.
