Make a list of the most important things that happened to you in each decade of your life, or in each important period, such as: the Indiana years, the Michigan years and the North Carolina years.
Flesh out each of the highlights you have chosen so readers will understand why it is a milestone or important event in your life. Write each of these anecdotes just as you would tell it to your best friend on the phone.
Go back through the list again and tighten up every sentence using the most active verbs and descriptive nouns you can think of. Eliminate all adjectives and adverbs you can while keeping the meaning clear.
Weave these events all together into story form.
Determine if your story is too long, too short or just the right length. If too long, eliminate the least important highlights. If it's too short, add another event or two from your life story that gives readers some important information about you.
