List of Subsidy Book Publishers

Subsidy book publishers are companies that charge authors to publish their books. Modern subsidy publishers may offer some marketing services in addition to printing and binding, and give authors a royalty on net proceeds. In theory, subsidy presses are selective in which manuscripts they choose to publish, but may be less restrictive in practice.

Vanity presses also charge authors to publish, but unlike with subsidy publishers, authors foot the entire bill for publication. Authors own the books outright and receive all profits from sales. Historically, vanity presses typically focus on "serious" or academic books but are not choosy about manuscript quality.

Digital print-on-demand publishers also charge authors a fee and issue royalities, but there is no overhead cost for storing inventory because books are only printed as they're purchased by consumers. Print-on-demand companies are not selective in choosing manuscripts for publication, but do offer editing, marketing and distribution options for additional cost.

Finally, authors pay the entire cost of publication and own the books with true self-publishing companies, which simply print and ship books. They offer few, if any, additional marketing services for publishing your book, which keeps the overall cost of publication relatively low.
