Cheap & Easy Guide to Self Publishing Ebooks

An ebook is short for an electronic book, which is used and transferred as an electronic file. Ebook files can be used on electronic readers, on computers and can be copied to CD or DVD for archiving and later viewing. Ebooks are a great way to publish yourself cheaply, without the need for a publisher or an agent.
  1. Template

    • If you wish to make your ebook quickly, without spending ages on designing it, you should download a free ebook template (see Resources). Ebook templates come as editable files that you can type your information into, or cut and paste pre-existing files to. If you will be making several ebooks over time, all with the same design, you can also create ebook templates using Word or Pages.

    Software

    • To make your ebook document, make sure you have software that can both edit the layout and style of your ebook as well as making sure your book has security placed into it by default. If you are thinking of selling your ebook, it is important that you set a level of security on it so that people do not share the document without paying you first. If one person downloads your book without security in place, he or she can share it amongst friends. Ten people now have your ebook, and you have only received payment for one. There is software available that can prevent this from happening. Adobe Acrobat Professional is a high-end solution, while Exebook is free software that can not only create your ebook, but also add that extra level of security you need.

    Publishing

    • To publish your Ebook, you can simply set up a download section on your website or blog. With most Web hosts, you will need to upload your ebook using an FTP client, such as FileZilla, to transfer the ebook to your website. From here, you can add a section to your website offering the ebook for free, or you can add a secure PayPal payment button by following the instructions on the PayPal website. There are other ebook solutions, such as online publishing sites where you can upload your book, and people can purchase them. The most popular of these websites is Lulu, a website that also does print-on-demand services, so that customers can purchase a hard copy of your ebook.
