Write and draw the graphic novel. Use the work of your favorite graphic novel writers or groups for research purposes when starting out. Graphic novels already in print can show common layouts and printing options.
Scan the pictures into a computer. Programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator are ideal for use on graphic novels because of the imaging capabilities these programs have.
Adjust the images and type in the words of the story. Handwritten words are often hard to read, so typed lettering is ideal. Edit the pictures until they are finished and ready for print.
Obtain funding. Grants, such as the Xeric Grant, are available for graphic novelists planning to self-publish.
Submit a request to one or more printers for a quote to print the graphic novel. Avoid deviating from standard paper size or type, as doing so will add substantially to the cost. Print several or many copies of the book at once to get better prices. Paying to print on demand is an option, but it is ultimately a higher cost than printing multiple copies at one time with a printer who uses offset lithography.
