Determine the goals of your publication. Focus your questions on three major areas: the publication's format, printing and distribution, and financing. Consider the tough questions like "How much money will I need?" "Why would anyone want to purchase my publication?" and "How will I get writers, inkers and illustrators to contribute to my publication?"
Develop an image. The name you select greatly influences the perceived professionalism and entertainment value of your publication. Select a name that means something to you and is an extension of the image you wish to convey. Once selected, register your name with your state's business-licensing division. Determine which type of business---sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation, for example---is best for your situation. Once complete, purchase an Internet domain name and develop a logo to establish your comic book's identity.
Create a business plan and secure financing. Your business plan should include, at minimum, a company overview, market analysis, objectives, market and competition, printing and distribution, and financial data. Your business plan should set the cover price, establish a method for recruiting talent, and aim to secure financing. Financing options include small business loans, private investors, and venture capitalists. See the Resource section for a link to a financing search tool.
Obtain an ISBN and product code. The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique article number that will identify your book. In addition, a product code---like the UPC or EAN---provides inventory and pricing standards. Order an ISBN from the ISBN Agency and a product code from the GS1 organization. See the Resource section for links to both sites.
Select a printing method. Consider print-on-demand (POD) or working with a traditional printer. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. For example, traditional printing requires a larger initial investment than POD. However, traditional printing offers a more consistent quality when compared with POD.
Select a distribution method. A combination of online and traditional distribution methods increases your comic book's visibility. Work with established wholesalers and distributors to get your publication into retail locations. In addition, contact independent booksellers to establish a relationship. Consider selling your comic book by direct mail via your website. In addition, list your publication with online stores like Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
