How to Get a Finished Book Project Published

Print-on-demand publishing allows authors to publish finished books. These companies set up your book file to print but only produce books upon request. You do not have to pay for books until they are printed, although some companies charge a set-up fee to get your files ready.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your finished book aside for three to six weeks to distance yourself from it. Ask trusted friends or family to read the book and give you feedback while you are waiting.

    • 2

Think about the feedback. Make changes to the book as needed.

    • 3

Proofread the book. Consider reading from the last page to the first to avoid getting distracted by the book's content. Correct typing and grammatical errors.

    • 4

Consider hiring a cover designer. You can find low-cost cover designers at your local college; students often are willing to work for lower prices in order to gain experience and exposure.

    • 5

Convert your book file to a PDF format file. If you do not have PDF conversion software, you can convert your file to PDF for free on websites such as www.freepdfconvert.com.

    • 6

Compare at least three print-on-demand companies such as lulu.com or createspace.com. Go to each site you are comparing. Type the number of pages (include the title page) into the site's web form and specify whether you want black and white or color printing to get a price quote. Examine FAQ information or information about the web site's services to find out whether the price includes distribution to online booksellers such as Amazon.

    • 7

Send your book file and cover file to the print-on-demand service of your choice.

    • 8

Tell your friends and family about your book so they can buy it.
