Write the book. Publishing companies will need a minimum writing sample to determine if they are willing to publish or not. Having the completed manuscript makes getting the book published easier.
Research the publishing companies in Ontario. Obtain a copy of "The Book Trade" in Canada through a local Canadian library to find the publishing companies in Ontario and information about the book genre’s the companies publish.
Call the publishing company to find out if an agent is necessary for publication. Some companies will require an agent while others will not. Company phone numbers can be obtained in the book previously obtained or through phone books. Agents will often need a sample of writing before they will work at getting an author published.
Write a query letter. A query letter is a cover letter for the manuscript. It should introduce the author, give information about the work and provide contact information. If the book is a nonfiction work, make sure to include information about how the author knows the subject, such as a degree. This should be around one page long and similar in format to a cover letter for a resume.
Send in the manuscript to Ontario publishers that publish the book's genre. The manuscript should have the query letter with it.
